MACHU PICCHU: THE LOST CITY OF THE INCAS
“Machupicchu” means “Old Peak”; It is a wonderful pre-Columbian Inca Temple located at 2,400 masl or 8000 ft. Machu Picchu is located in the region of Cusco – Peru on the Vilcanota mountain range 500 meters above Urubamba River.
Most Archeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca Emperor Pachacutec (1438–1472). Often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas”, it is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca civilization.
The great Machu Picchu was built around 1450, when the Inca Empire was at its maximum splendor; the construction of Machu Picchu appears to date from the period of the two great Incas, Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui (1438-71) and Tupac Inca Yupanqui (1472-93). It was abandoned just over 100 years later, in 1572, as a related result of the Spanish conquest.
It is possible that most of its inhabitants of Machu Picchu died from illnesses introduced by travellers before the Spanish “Conquistadores/Conquerors” arrived in the area.
WHAT WAS MACHU PICCHU?
Hiram Bingham theorized that the complex was the traditional birthplace of the Inca “Virgins of the Sun”; because he found that 80% of the mummies of Machu Picchu was females and 15% was mails and the 5% has no clear identification.
More recent research by scholars such as the Anthropology John H. Rowe and Richard Burger, has convinced most archaeologists that Machu Picchu was an estate of the Inca Emperor Pachacutec. In addition, Anthropology John Reihard presented evidence that the site was selected because of its position relative to sacred landscape features such as its mountains which are purported to be in alignment with key astronomical events important to the Incas.
