PACKING LIST
Get ready to create the Inca Trail packing list! As you embark on this incredible journey, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking views at every turn. So, leave your worries behind and fully immerse yourself in the beauty that awaits you.
When it comes to packing for the Inca Trail, there are some obvious essentials and some hidden gems that might not be so obvious to first-time trekkers. But worry not, we’ve got you covered with a comprehensive list that includes must-have items from both categories. After all, what might be obvious to one person may not be as clear to another.
Before we dive into the list, here’s a quick note: Regardless of the tour company you choose, you’ll have the option to enlist the help of porters who will carry most of your belongings. You’ll only need to carry a day-pack. However, it’s important to remember that there are limits to what you can bring. It’s not only a matter of common decency for those carrying your load, but each tour company also has its own regulations. So, be sure to familiarize yourself with these limits before finalizing your Inca Trail packing list.
Discover Inca Trail Packing List!
1. Passport – Don’t leave home without it! Your passport is not only required to enter Peru but also to embark on the Inca Trail. Remember to bring it along for the official government checkpoint at the trailhead. Plus, you’ll have the option of getting a cool passport stamp to commemorate your incredible journey.
2. Proper Hiking Attire – Prepare for the elements and keep comfort in mind. With limited opportunities to shower, pack extra underwear and socks. Layering is key, as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day and night. Consider zip-off hiking pants, both short and long-sleeved shirts, and a lightweight jacket. Don’t forget cold weather gear like hats, gloves, and scarves, especially if you’ll be trekking during colder months.
3. Footwear – Choose waterproof hiking boots or a sturdy hiking shoe/boot hybrid to handle the terrain. Remember, even during the dry season, rain and mud are possibilities. Boots offer better ankle support, while shoes are lighter. Make sure your footwear fits well and is broken in to avoid painful blisters on your four-day adventure.
4. Waterproof Gear – Be prepared for wet weather with a poncho or rain jacket. Keep your wet clothes separate from dry ones by packing plastic bags. Even if you’re trekking during the dry season, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
5. Sleeping Bag – Don’t sacrifice comfort during nights on the trail. Choose a suitable sleeping bag that will ensure a good night’s rest.
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey along the Inca Trail, armed with this comprehensive packing list. Happy adventuring!

8. Water bottles/snacks: While your tour company will supply food and water, it’s always good to have extra for those thirst-quenching moments and snack cravings during the day.
9. First-aid kit/personal medications: Although your guides carry a first-aid kit, it’s wise to have a basic one with you during your Inca Trail trek. Include medications for stomach problems or any personal medication you require.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT DISCOVER INCA TRAIL TO MACHU PICCHU
Embarking on the Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu is an experience steeped in breathtaking beauty and historical significance. It is essential to note that the trail can only accommodate a limited number of adventurers each day to preserve its pristine condition and sacred heritage. This exclusivity ensures that your trek remains a personal, intimate experience, untainted by overcrowding. We are committed to sustainability and the protection of this ancient path, aligning with regulations that safeguard its integrity for future generations.
To ensure your place on this unforgettable voyage, early booking is strongly advised. We take care of all permits and necessary arrangements, making your preparation process smooth and hassle-free. Adequate physical preparation is recommended, as the trek involves navigating diverse terrains and altitudes that can challenge even seasoned hikers. However, the sense of achievement upon reaching the Sun Gate and witnessing the first light dawn over Machu Picchu is incomparably rewarding.
ARRIVAL IN CUSCO:
Arriving in the heart of the Andes, Cusco, is an experience in itself, markedly different from any other. For globetrotters flying in from distant lands, your adventure begins in Lima, where you’ll transfer to a domestic flight to Cusco. While LAN provides the most flight options and sleek service, be mindful of the higher price point reflective of its premium offerings. Cusco’s unique altitude presents an exciting challenge for pilots, leading to occasional delays or cancellations due to weather whimsies. This is not just travel; it’s your first step into a world where the modern meets the mystical.
For the road warriors among us, the bus route stands as a testament to endurance and an appetite for adventure, offering a longer yet enrichingly scenic alternative to flying. Be prepared for a journey that slowly unveils the majestic Andean horizon, albeit with fewer options depending on your point of departure.
Whatever your path to Cusco, the anticipation of what awaits is part of the enchantment. Inca Trail Treks is poised to ensure that your arrival, by air or land, is the beginning of an unparalleled exploration into the heart of the Incan empire. Your adventure is our passion, and every step towards Cusco is a step closer to an epic tale waiting to unfold. Welcome to the threshold of discovery. Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime.
ABOUT ALTITUD:
Altitude sickness can happen to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. It is important to be aware of the symptoms and take precautions such as drinking plenty of fluids, getting rest and taking medications. We recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before beginning any trek to give your body time to adjust. Not only will you be more prepared for the trek, but it also gives you the opportunity to explore and enjoy the amazing city of Cusco.
There is a range of activities to enjoy, from visiting the nearby Inca ruins to exploring the local markets. The extra time spent will help your body acclimatize, and you’ll be better prepared for an incredible experience in Peru. Altitude sickness can cause illness if not taken seriously, so it is important to listen to your body and take precautions when trekking in Peru. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids, rest, and take medications if necessary. With the proper preparation and precautions, you can make your trek a safe and enjoyable experience. Altitude sickness can be prevented with the right knowledge and planning. Taking the time to acclimatize is an essential part of preparing for a trek in Peru!
ABOUT WEATHER:
Weather can vary greatly when doing a trek in the Andes. You may find yourself walking through bright and sunny weather one moment, only to experience cold rain the next. It is important to be prepared for all weather conditions, no matter what month you are doing the trek in. Even during Cusco’s dry season (April-October), rain can still fall in June and the sun can come out in December. Therefore, it is important to bring rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho and waterproof gloves. Many people forget about gloves, but being cold and wet makes hiking very unpleasant. Additionally, you should be prepared for four seasons as many of the treks through the Andes involve many micro-climates. Layering your clothing is the best way to stay comfortable and prepared for any weather conditions you may encounter. So, no matter when you are doing a trek in the Andes, make sure you are adequately prepared for any weather that may come your way!
CHANGING MONEY:
If you are travelling to this region, we recommend that you bring a combination of cash and cards. Cash points/ATMs are widely available and are the safest and easiest way to access cash. Additionally, you could also consider changing money at currency exchange offices or banks in the area. Please bear in mind that changing money at the airport may not always provide you with the most competitive exchange rate. Most major credit cards are accepted throughout the region, and can be used to pay for goods and services. We recommend that you bring yours along in case you see something special, which you hadn’t budgeted for.
MEALS:
Your included meals for the tour are detailed in the ‘Inclusions’ section of this document.
Breakfasts are included every day in all your trips (except on the first morning). A typical breakfast may consist of cereals with milk or yoghurt, bread, croissants, cold meats, cheese and a range of spreads, with fruit juice, tea or coffee to drink. It is rare to get a hot breakfast, though on some occasions there may be some hot food available as well.
When included, evening meals are in local restaurants or you place of accommodation and are either two or three courses. In most cases table water is provided with the meals, and if you wish to purchase additional drinks you can do so at your own expense.
If you have any dietary requirements we will make every effort to cater to your specific needs as long as you advise your travel agent or SUNRISE PERU TREK trip Consultant when you book. But please be aware that although we will do everything in our power to arrange it, we cannot guarantee that every restaurant we use will be able to cater to all dietary needs. We also cannot cater for tastes or dislikes, as most of our included evening meals feature a set menu.
If you allow USD 20 per day in Peru for meals not included you will be able to eat fairly well.
GRATITUDE:
Although you may not be accustomed to tipping at home, tipping (known locally as ‘baksheesh’) is an important way of life in Peru and is something that is done by locals as well as tourists.
When travelling with top deck, tips are already included on anything that forms part of your itinerary, including bus/coach drivers, included meals, hotel staff, local guides, etc. This includes your SUNRISE PERU TREK tour leader. That means you do not have to tip for any of these included services!
However, you will need to tip for services that are not included, so please take this into consideration when working out your budget. For example, you will need to tip at non-included meals when you pay for the meal yourself, even if your Trip Leader has helped organize it, and you will need to tip for anything you do on your free time.
Your Trip Leader can advise you what an appropriate tip amount is. A general rule when tipping is if the service warrants it, tip what you think is a fair amount, and if you do not think so, then do not tip or tip less than normal. Also, do not get bullied into tipping and disregard any comments that you have not given enough.
ENTRANCE FEES:
Please note: while we make every effort to keep these prices as accurate and up-to-date as possible, they are subject to change and in rare circumstances the actual price may vary slightly to what is published here.
TRANSPORT:
Depending on your trip, you could be travelling in a modern air-conditioned coach or mini-buses, or tourist train.
Importantly we own all of our coaches, meaning we can be sure they are well serviced and of a high standard. The quality of all other types of transport has been thoroughly checked and verified by our local offices to ensure they meet our specific requirements. All transport is included in your trip price, and will ensure you arrive at each destination feeling refreshed and ready to explore.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We want to make sure you’re having the time of your life while travelling with us. Therefore, if you suffer from any kind of medical condition or allergies, we will need to know at the time of booking, or at least 2 weeks prior to the departure of your Tour.
If you require regular medication, you must have a sufficient supply before your trip departs, as it may be difficult to obtain while travelling. You must be able to administer your own medication.
Strict food and water hygiene is essential to avoid diarrhoea. Make sure food has been properly prepared, drink only boiled or bottled water and keep in mind that ice will likely come from tap water. Also take precautions against insect bites and sunburn. During the hot summer months it is advisable to carry bottled water in your day-pack at all times.
VACCINATIONS:
We recommend that you ensure your tetanus, diphtheria, typhoid, polio and hepatitis vaccinations are up to date. Please consult a medical practitioner for the relevant requirements prior to travelling.
SAFETY NOTE:

We are here to help ensure that you enjoy a safe and pleasant experience while on Tour with SUNRISE PERU TREK. Thank you!
TRAVEL INSURANCE:
It is important to consider travel insurance when you are planning a trek. Obtaining travel insurance helps protect you financially in case something happens that prevents you from completing your trek. Even if you have paid for the entire trip in advance, travel insurance can help cover any additional costs that may be incurred as a result of not being able to finish the hike. We strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance before leaving home to ensure your financial safety in the event of any unexpected circumstances. Please read our Booking Conditions carefully to understand what payments will be due even if you are unable to complete your trek. Purchasing travel insurance is a wise investment and can help protect you from large financial losses should something happen during your trek.

Best Time to Hike the Inca Trail
The best time to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. These months offer pleasant weather with less rainfall, making it easier to navigate the trail and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes along the way.
During the dry season, temperatures are mild during the day and drop significantly at night, so it’s important to pack appropriate clothing to stay warm. Layering your clothing is recommended to accommodate changes in temperature throughout the day.
It’s worth noting that the Inca Trail is closed during February for maintenance, so plan your trip accordingly to avoid disappointment.
Important Considerations for a Successful Journey
Before setting off on your Machu Picchu trek, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind:
- Physical Fitness: The Inca Trail trek involves some challenging sections, including steep ascents and descents. It’s important to be in good physical shape and train for endurance prior to the hike. Consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about your fitness level.
- Altitude Acclimatization: Machu Picchu is located at high altitude, reaching up to 7,972 feet (2,430 meters). To prevent altitude sickness, it’s recommended to spend a few days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting your trek. This will help your body adjust to the thin air and minimize the risk of altitude-related issues.
- Packing Essentials: When packing for your Machu Picchu trek, make sure to include sturdy hiking boots, breathable clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a first aid kit, and a comfortable backpack. Don’t forget essentials like a water bottle, snacks, and a headlamp.
