Packing Tips and Recommendations
Preparing for your 9-day adventure through Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca requires careful planning to ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are a few additional tips to help you make your packing process as efficient as possible:
- Pack Light but Smart: Since you’ll be moving between locations, prioritize lightweight and multipurpose items. Avoid overpacking, as this can make traveling cumbersome.
- Layering is Key: With varying climates, from chilly mornings in Cusco to sunny hikes at Machu Picchu, layering allows you to adjust to temperature changes easily.
- Stay Hydrated: The high altitude can be challenging, so bring a sturdy, refillable water bottle. Many refill stations are available, helping you stay hydrated while reducing plastic waste.
- Protection from the Elements: Don’t underestimate the power of the sun at high altitudes. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat can help protect you from sunburn during outdoor adventures.
- Organize Your Bag: Using packing cubes or resealable bags can keep your items organized and make it easy to access what you need without rummaging through your entire bag.
- Plan for Altitude: For first-time travelers to high altitudes, it may be worth consulting your doctor about medications or strategies to mitigate altitude sickness symptoms.
- Leave Space for Souvenirs: Peru is known for its beautiful textiles, handicrafts, and unique keepsakes. Packing light allows you room to bring home mementos of your trip.
With these suggestions in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to immerse yourself in Peru’s awe-inspiring landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Remember, the key to an enjoyable trip is being flexible, staying prepared, and maintaining a spirit of adventure!
- Pack Smart with a Small Suitcase and Backpack: When traveling through Peru, it’s highly recommended to bring a small suitcase and a 30-liter backpack. The smaller suitcase makes navigating cobblestone streets and compact transportation options much easier, while the backpack is perfect for day trips and excursions. This combination allows you to carry essentials comfortably and stay agile during your travels.

ESSENTIAL INFO FOR MACHU PICCHU AND LAKE TITICACA TOUR
How do I get there?:
For this tour you need to arrive to Cusco. Cusco airport is currently reserved for domestic flights, so all international travelers by air must disembark in Lima (The Capital of Peru) and go through customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is on the same day by the same airline, you must collect your luggage in Lima and then check it in again.
The best way to get to Cusco is by plane and there are several options on the airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive, but has the most options and flights. Expect flight delays or cancellations. Due to the high altitude of Cusco it tends to be difficult to land and any changes in the weather will stop air traffic. Bus trips are always available and although the journey can be long, especially from Lima, buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is highly recommended if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno. Buses from Lima will take around 20 hours to arrive in Cusco.
Accommodations:
During the tour, we will provide accommodations in a 3-star hotel with rooms available in twin/double or triple setups, all equipped with private bathrooms. Breakfast will also be included each morning.
If you are a solo traveler and prefer to have your room, an additional cost of $25 per night will apply, totaling $200 for the entire stay. Our hotel is conveniently located near the main square of Cusco, making it easy to explore the city during your free time.
For those looking for a more luxurious experience, there are also many high-end hotels and resorts available in Cusco and Puno. These options will provide upgraded amenities and services, but at a higher cost. It is recommended to book these accommodations well in advance as they tend to fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons.
Luggage:
The price of your ticket typically includes a cabin pack consisting of a suitcase weighing up to 10 kg, along with a backpack or any other type of hand luggage. If you require additional space for your belongings, there is always the option to upgrade to a larger luggage package for an extra fee. When traveling by bus, it is essential to note that the luggage allowance may vary depending on the company and the specific route. Additionally, you are allowed to carry a small backpack of up to 30 liters for convenience during your trip.
Store Your Luggage While on the Tour
Most of the time, your suitcase will remain at the hotel, and you will head out for tours with your small backpack for convenience. However, if you need to store your luggage for some time, many hotels and hostels provide luggage storage services for their guests. Alternatively, you can find storage facilities at our office available for free. To ensure the safety of your belongings, it is important to label your bags clearly with your name and contact information before leaving them in storage. This simple precaution adds an extra level of security and peace of mind during your trip.
Transport:
During this tour, we’ll utilize a variety of transportation options to ensure a comfortable and efficient experience. In the city of Cusco, we’ll use a small bus and a train to Machu Picchu. From Cusco to Puno, our group will travel using vans, small buses, and big buses, depending on the size of the group and the route. Once we reach Lake Titicaca, motorized launches will be used to explore the lake and its breathtaking surroundings, providing a seamless way to visit its iconic islands and enjoy the stunning scenery.
About the Altitude
As soon as you book your trip to Peru, especially the Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca Tour, it is natural to start wondering about altitude sickness. The air at higher altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level, which forces your body to work harder to obtain the oxygen it needs. Over several days at high altitude, your body will adjust to the reduced oxygen levels in the air. However, during this adjustment period, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness.
Initially, altitude sickness can feel similar to having the flu or a hangover. Common symptoms include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, and difficulty breathing during physical activity. While these symptoms are typically mild, if they become severe, it is crucial to contact our office so we can assist you in seeking medical attention.
To reduce the likelihood of experiencing altitude sickness, we recommend taking things slowly upon arrival and allowing your body time to acclimatize. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or coca tea. Coca tea, made from the leaves of the coca plant, has been used for centuries to help prevent altitude sickness. The alkaloids in the coca leaves aid in oxygen delivery to your blood, alleviating some of the effects of low oxygen levels.
It is also best to avoid alcohol and coffee, as these can increase urination and lead to dehydration. Additionally, refrain from smoking, as it reduces your body’s ability to absorb oxygen, and avoid sleeping pills, which can cause shallow nighttime breathing.
For those particularly concerned about altitude sickness, your healthcare professional may recommend medications such as acetazolamide or dexamethasone. These should be started two days before ascending to high altitudes and continued throughout your stay. By taking these precautions, you can better prepare yourself to enjoy your high-altitude adventure in Peru comfortably and safely.
Consider Taking Medicine for Altitude Sickness
To aid in acclimatization and mitigate the effects of altitude sickness, consider taking Diamox (acetazolamide). This medication can help accelerate the acclimatization process and should be started two days before your ascent, continuing until you reach your maximum sleeping altitude. For headaches caused by Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide effective relief. Additionally, it’s advisable to carry an antiemetic to address nausea and vomiting that may arise from AMS. For a natural alternative to anti-nausea medications, ginger can help ease symptoms without the drowsiness associated with some medications. Lastly, it’s essential to avoid alcohol and sleeping pills, as they can interfere with proper breathing patterns and exacerbate the symptoms of altitude sickness.
Weather in Machu Picchu
The weather in Machu Picchu can be highly unpredictable, requiring travelers to be ready for sudden changes. While the dry season in Cusco typically spans from April to October, rain showers can still occur in the middle of June, and sunny days are not unheard of in December. For this reason, it’s important to always be prepared. Rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves, is indispensable no matter the time of year.
Furthermore, the region’s diverse microclimates mean you should prepare for all four seasons in a single trip. Layered clothing is a must, as it allows you to adapt easily to changing temperatures. Even if the day starts warm, nights and afternoons in the Andes are often cold. Be sure to pack a warm, lightweight jacket to stay comfortable during colder moments of your adventure.
